FAQ Schema Guide: How to Add FAQ Structured Data to Your Website
Many pages answer questions, but machines have to guess where a question starts and the answer ends. FAQ schema removes the guess. It is a small block of code that says: here is a question, and here is its answer.
It is one of the simplest parts of AEO and a safe place to start.
What FAQ schema is
Schema.org is a shared vocabulary that search engines understand. FAQPage is one type in it. You place it in your page as JSON-LD, which is a script block that visitors do not see but crawlers read.
Does FAQ schema still help?
Google has reduced how often it shows FAQ rich results, mostly to well-known government and health sites. That does not make the markup useless. It still describes your content clearly to search engines and to AI tools, and it keeps your questions and answers organised. We use it where the FAQ is visible on the page, and we never expect a guaranteed rich result from it.
A copy-ready example
Replace the text with your own visible questions and answers:
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "FAQPage",
"mainEntity": [{
"@type": "Question",
"name": "How long does a website take?",
"acceptedAnswer": {
"@type": "Answer",
"text": "A small business website usually takes a few weeks."
}
}]
}
</script>How to add it, step by step
Write real questions
Use questions customers actually ask. Four to eight per page is enough.
Show them on the page
Put the same questions and answers in visible text, for example in an FAQ section.
Create the JSON-LD
Write one Question for each item. Keep answers plain text, with only simple links if needed.
Place it in the page
Add the script to the page head or body. WordPress SEO plugins such as Rank Math have an FAQ block that does it for you.
Test and monitor
Check it in the Rich Results Test and watch Search Console for errors.
Common mistakes
Do
- Keep markup identical to visible text
- Use one FAQPage per page
- Update both when the answer changes
- Write helpful, honest answers
Avoid
- Marking up questions that are not on the page
- Using FAQ schema for adverts
- Copying the same FAQ on every page
- Duplicate FAQPage blocks from two plugins
How to test your FAQ schema
- Open Google’s Rich Results Test and paste the page URL
- Check the Schema.org validator for syntax errors
- Look at Search Console → Enhancements for warnings after a few days

Speak to an expertSee our servicesFrequently asked questions
Is FAQ schema a ranking factor?
Not directly. It helps machines understand the page, which supports visibility, but it does not guarantee a higher position.
Can I use FAQ schema on every page?
Only where the page really has a visible FAQ section that helps users. Do not add it everywhere.
JSON-LD or microdata?
JSON-LD is the format Google recommends because it is separate from your visible HTML and easier to maintain.
