How to Get Your Business Recommended by ChatGPT (9 Steps)

9 min readUpdated October 2026AI search · SEO · GEO
Short answerNobody can pay ChatGPT to recommend a business, but you can make it far easier for AI tools to find, understand and trust you. Let AI crawlers read your site, state your services and city in plain text, add schema, keep your details consistent everywhere, earn real reviews and answer your customers’ questions in the first sentence.

Open ChatGPT and type “Who is the best web designer in Nepal?” or “Which dentist in Frisco takes new patients?” You will not get ten blue links. You will get a short answer that names two or three businesses. Customers who read that answer often go straight to those names and never scroll further.

If you are not in that answer, you are invisible at the exact moment someone is ready to choose. The good news: AI tools are not magic. They pick from sources they can read and trust, and you can influence both.

Nine steps to get a business recommended by ChatGPT: crawl access, plain facts, schema, reviews and mentions
The nine steps in one view. Details below.

How AI tools decide who to recommend

When a person asks an AI assistant for a recommendation, the tool either answers from what it learned in training or, more and more, runs a live web search and summarises the best sources. In both cases three questions decide whether you are named.

1Can it read you?Your pages must be crawlable, fast and written in real text, not locked in images, sliders or popups.
2Can it verify you?Your name, address, phone, services and prices must match across your website, Google profile and directories.
3Do others vouch for you?Reviews, directory listings, press and mentions on other sites tell the AI that real people trust you.
Why this matters: Search engines rank pages. AI tools recommend entities, meaning businesses they can clearly identify. The work is less about keywords and more about being unmistakably clear about who you are and what you do.

The 9-step playbook

1

Let AI crawlers read your website

Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt. If you want to appear in AI search results, do not block the search crawlers. Also check that important pages are not set to noindex and load without errors.

# Allow the AI search crawlers you want to appear in
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /

# Training crawlers are your choice
User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /private/

OAI-SearchBot is used for ChatGPT search, while GPTBot is used for model training. Allowing one and limiting the other is a normal choice.

2

Say what you do in plain text

State your services, “from” prices, city and contact details in normal page text. AI tools quote text. They cannot reliably quote a banner image.

Weak

“Premium digital solutions for modern brands.”

Strong

3

Answer real questions in the first sentence

Use question headings your customers actually type, then answer in one or two sentences before adding detail. This is the exact shape AI tools lift into answers.

Heading: How much does a website cost in Nepal?
First sentence:

4

Add schema markup

Schema is a small block of structured data that tells machines who you are. Use Organization or the most specific business type, plus Service, FAQPage and Article where they fit. Mark up only what is visible on the page, then test it in Google’s Rich Results Test.

{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "ProfessionalService",
  "name": "Your Business Name",
  "url": "https://yourbusiness.com",
  "telephone": "+977-98XXXXXXXX",
  "areaServed": ["Kathmandu", "Nepal"],
  "description": "Dental clinic in Kathmandu offering implants, braces and whitening.",
  "sameAs": ["https://www.linkedin.com/company/yourbusiness"]
}
5

Keep your business details identical everywhere

Use the same name, address, phone number and one-line description on your website, Google Business Profile, Facebook, LinkedIn and directories. Small differences create doubt, and doubt means you are skipped.

6

Earn real reviews and mentions

AI tools lean on businesses that other trusted sites talk about. Ask happy customers for honest reviews, get listed in relevant directories, and publish things worth linking to. Never buy reviews. It risks penalties and it is easy to spot.

7

Publish original, specific content

Generic text is everywhere, so it is rarely cited. Share your real prices, real timelines, real examples and a named author. Link related pages together so the AI understands your topics, for example from this guide to our SEO vs AEO vs GEO guide.

8

Add an llms.txt file

llms.txt is a short, readable summary of your site with links to your key pages, placed at yourdomain.com/llms.txt. It is a proposed convention, not a ranking factor, but it is cheap to add and helps machines find your best pages.

9

Measure every month

Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the questions your customers ask. Note whether you are named, who is named instead and which sources are cited. Compare month by month, and watch clicks and impressions in Google Search Console.

Mistakes that keep you invisible

What hurts you

  • Blocking all bots in robots.txt by accident
  • Putting prices and services only inside images
  • Different phone numbers on different profiles
  • Thin pages that copy competitors
  • Buying fake reviews or mentions

What helps you

  • One clear page per service
  • Direct answers under question headings
  • Schema that matches the visible page
  • Honest reviews with owner replies
  • Monthly checks and small improvements
Be careful: Anyone who guarantees you a ChatGPT mention is selling a promise nobody can keep. Results vary by tool, by question and over time.

Your 30-day action plan

WeekFocusOutput
Week 1Access and basicsrobots.txt checked, sitemap submitted, noindex errors fixed, details matched everywhere
Week 2Plain-text factsServices, prices, city and contact details rewritten as readable text on key pages
Week 3Questions and schemaFive question headings with direct answers, FAQ and business schema added
Week 4Trust and measureReview requests sent, directories updated, llms.txt added, baseline prompt test recorded

How to test if it is working

Run these five prompts in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, and save the answers in a spreadsheet. Repeat monthly.

  1. “Best [your service] in [your city]?”
  2. “Who do you recommend for [your service] near [neighbourhood]?”
  3. “How much does [your service] cost in [your city]?”
  4. “What should I look for when choosing a [your service]?”
  5. “Is [your business name] good?”

The last prompt matters most. It shows what AI tools already believe about you, so fix any wrong or missing facts first.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get my business recommended by ChatGPT?

Make your site crawlable, state your services and location in plain text, add schema markup, keep your business details consistent online, earn real reviews and mentions, and answer customer questions clearly. These steps raise your chances, but no one can guarantee a mention.

How long does it take to appear in ChatGPT answers?

There is no fixed timeline. Many businesses see change after a few months of cleaning up their website, schema and profiles, but results vary between tools and over time.

Do I need to block or allow GPTBot?

GPTBot is used by OpenAI for model training, while OAI-SearchBot is used for search. If you want to be cited in search answers, allow OAI-SearchBot. Whether to allow GPTBot is your choice.

Does llms.txt guarantee AI citations?

No. It is a proposed convention that helps machines find your key pages. It is not a ranking factor, but it is a low-cost addition.
